Aim 2017 Green Community of the Year Designation
The City of Fishers is proud to announce that Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (Aim) has designated Fishers as a 2017 Green Community of the Year, the third consecutive designation for the city, for its various sustainability efforts, including:

  • Two annual community recycling days, hosted by Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW).
  • Efforts by Fishers Economic Development Department to revitalize and repurpose unused or underutilized commercial retail spaces.
  • A rain barrel program overseen by Fishers Parks & Recreation at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, offering free rain barrels to residents which helps to repurpose rainwater.
  • Expansion of Keep Fishers Beautiful, a collaboration between Fishers Parks & Recreation and Fishers DPW, Stormwater Division. Projects this year focused on cleaning waterways and roadways throughout Fishers.
  • Lastly, a change in turf management policy in which Fishers DPW switched fertilizer to use a product that sprays microorganisms into the turf that secrete positive nutrients into the soil, thus fertilizing the grass.

Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved in Fishers. Check out our volunteer opportunities with  Fishers, local and county organizations, and our event calendar to discover all the options.

Hazardous Waste
For every day general recycling information, please contact the Hamilton County Household Hazardous Waste Center at 317-776-4005 or visit their website at  for information about materials that are accepted, location, and hours.

Recycling

Fishers Recycling Days in the spring and fall include the option to recycle all electronics, household items (such as mowers, treadmills, bikes, grills, batteries, cardboard, power tools, metals, etc.) and household hazardous wastes (such as automotive fluids, acids, paints, fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, medical sharps, and fluorescent lamp and PCB ballasts). We also offer paper recycling and off-site confidential document shredding. Some items such as monitors and TVs may carry a small fee per item. Find out more about the Fall Recycling Day on Saturday, September 30.

Stormwater Management & Rain Barrel Program
Stormwater quality is important to everyone. Rainwater that falls on streets, parking lots, rooftops, and lawns often becomes polluted by automotive fluids, household chemicals, eroded soils, and lawn fertilizers before it enters the city's storm sewer system through inlets. Your help in this program is welcomed. The program's success will depend on community involvement to help educate everyone about stormwater, clean up areas around streams and rivers, and to identify sources of pollution.

Tree City USA
Fishers is a Tree City USA and is committed to sustaining a healthy urban canopy. The city offers a number of programs and events to plant trees and enhance the natural environment:

Trail System
Whether you want to enjoy nature, get or stay fit, or do your bit to help protect the environment; Fishers Trail and Greenway System is designed to accommodate your needs. When complete, it will serve as a pedestrian / bicyclist oriented network of trails that link parks, neighborhoods, schools, the government center, work places, and other points of interest in the community. More than 83 miles are currently available for use.
