[ARCHIVED] Fishers Arts Council, City of Fishers partner for “INvisible Art,” 1st-of-its-kind hydrophobic art

While hydrophobic paint, which repels water, has been used for art installations in London, Seattle, and other rainy cities, Fishers artist Jessica Springman has created what the Fishers Arts Council believes to be the first installation of its kind in Indiana.

“INvisible Art” is a roughly 120-foot linear installation on two sidewalks surrounding Central Green in downtown Fishers’ Nickel Plate Art District. Springman used 76 hand-cut stencils and Rust-oleum’s NeverWet Multisurface paint to create the piece. The paint is non-toxic and non-permanent, although the art will be visible for up to two years depending on traffic and other wear and tear on the sidewalks.

The stencils range in size from 17” x 17” to 34” x 34” and are positioned along both the east and west sidewalks adjacent to Central Green. Because of the nature of the paint, the installation only will be visible when it rains or if water is poured onto the designs. Springman posted a preview video of one section of the art on her Facebook page.

Fishers Arts Council and the artist will unveil the installation on Tuesday, July 12, at 6:30 p.m. before the Saxony Hospital Tuesday Summer Concert Series featuring Parrots of The Caribbean.

The project was funded by a grant in 2015 from the City of Fishers to create public art projects that add vitality to the Nickel Plate District. Other grant funds are being used this year for live music during the upcoming Fishers Arts Crawl on July 15 and for additional public art installations and performances.
