[ARCHIVED] Things Your Mother Never Taught You

On Saturday, October 4 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Things Your Mother Never Taught You, is taking place at the historic Ambassador House & Heritage Gardens. This event, sponsored by the Fishers Parks & Recreation Department and the Friends of the Ambassador House & Heritage Gardens, is an event to teach the things your mother never taught you about gardening and planting. The event is not only informational but also hands-on. A variety of stations will be set-up throughout the property that will have a different tip with information and a hands-on scene or activity for participants to complete. These “Things Your Mother Never Taught You” should help the professional or amateur gardener improve.

There is a wide variety of topics throughout the ten-plus things your mother never taught you. One of the tips is how to mulch correctly. You will learn that volcano mulching allows for insects to get to the base of the tree or plan, it allows suckering and it causes a soft rot in the plan. Instead, the right way to mulch a plant is with a donut configuration. Another tip your mother never taught you is the proper way to water. It is better to add an inch of water to the garden weekly, rather than a small amount every day. Use a rain gage to monitor your addition of natural rain. And It is better to water in the morning. Never water at night! Watering at night allow fungus, mildew and bacteria growth on plants.

Pre-registration is appreciated and can be done by mailing or coming into the Fishers Parks & Recreation Office (11565 Brooks School Road, Fishers, IN 46037). For more information about Things Your Mother Never Taught You, contact 317-595-3133 or
